This block was released almost two weeks ago here as part of the I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long. I finally finished it. If you remember from one of my latter posts here, I had just picked out my fabrics for this block. As what usually happens just before I cut, I changed my mind. So now I give you my completed block.
This cute pattern is from Jennifer at The Inquiring Quilter, link above. It’s not too late to make one and link up at her site for some prizes.
I think it will go nicely with the Santa Belt that I finished.
The reds are the same fabric even if they look different here.
This was my first attempt at doing a blanket stitch on the machine to applique those ornaments down. I think I did well for my first time.
It turned out very flat but I see it needs another good pressing.
But I added some stabilizer to the back and away I stitched. It stayed put nicely and didn’t pull in from the sides. I was impressed….until I turned it over.
I will have lots of picking out to do.

What I Learned Today:
- Think twice before doing a blanket stitch using stabilizer. I had no problem tearing away the stabilizer from the straight stitch side but the other side is awful to remove.
- It’s ok to change my mind. I am glad I changed my mind about the fabrics for this block.
Question: Do you stabilize your applique or not? I don’t like how satin stitches on an applique pulls in the fabric but maybe the blanket stitch wouldn’t have done that anyway.

I don’t use stabilizer when I do blanket stitching on appliqué. You did a nice job on your stitching!

I have only tried the buttonhole stitch on a small applique project for practice. I intended to practice more but once I emptied the sewing room for the redo and set up in the living room I didn’t want to have to keep going into the closet to find the things I packed away – the second machine was one of them as I don’t use it as much. Once I get set back up in the sewing room i want to practice some buttonhole applique again. I didn’t use a tear away stabilizer but did use a very light fusible to hold the piece in place and that work – my stitching was not all that great though

I think your buttonholing or blanket stitch looks great! Especially for your first attempt. I am thrilled that my new sewing machine can do this stitch – I used to do it all by hand, which I do enjoy. The machine is so much faster. ~smile~ Roseanne

Looks good, I did not user stabilizer on my blocks, but I find when I do smaller pieces, I need it for some reason.

I like your color coordinated ornaments. I didn’t even think of that because I’ve never had a tree like that. LOL The gray background is super, too. Normally, I DO use the buttonhole machine stitch on my Viking, but today, I tried a zigzag. I don’t like it as well, but it’s done. =) Yours looks great, especially for the first time using it.

That’s a cute block to start with, but the blanket stitch rally makes it. So cute!

I used the thinnest iron on behind the snowflake, but it was still too thick in comparison with plain fabric. So I have sewn another. For the baubles and the second snowflake I used Solvy or something similar to wash-away, and it worked a treat . Love the “all red” way with your baubles.

I would use a wash away stabilizer next time. It should work better I think. Your block though looks gorgeous! First time? Bah. Can’t believe that it’s so good.

Have you tried the water soluble stabllzer? Just cold water on the back. It disolves.
