Tu-Na Quilts: I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long Block One is Finally Done

Some ideas just have to percolate for awhile. That’s the way it was with my snowflake.

This pattern was designed by Vanda from Quilt in Piece and can be downloaded here free through January 15, 2018; don’t delay, download yours today.

I wasn’t sure how to proceed. Should I make a white snowflake on a red background or a gray one? Should I make a gray snowflake on a white background or a red one? Where should I add some ric rac? I asked my husband; no help there. I asked my quilting group friends; some said use the red background while others said use the gray background.

I decided to make a more open snowflake by tracing the smaller piece inside the larger one and cutting it out. I was careful and used both of these pieces in the pattern so I didn’t have to make more.

In the end, I decided to make a white snowflake on a gray background. I found some white ric rac with a red thread going thru it and edged both sides of the circle.

I cut the square of fabric 13.5″ so it could be trimmed later. I did some playing with the applique pieces and traced the smaller circle in the middle of the larger one and cut it out. This gave me an open edge to stitch ric rac around.

I then used some really tiny white ric rac to edge the 8 smaller shapes.

I used Lite Steam a Seam 2 so it is sticky which helped the ric rac stay in place until I could iron it down and then machine applique around all the edges. I also found that my pieces laid flatter if I stopped sewing with the needle down at the edge of the fabric, lifted the presser foot, and repositioned the fabric when it needed rather than turning the fabric.

And then I thought for awhile. Should I add more ric rac around the outside of the larger shapes or not? In the end, I decided to and am ever so happy with it.

I think the ric rac gives a crochet look to the snowflake.

This was very time consuming.

tunaquilts 8a

After carefully applying the ric rac to the sticky part of the underside of the pieces, I laid them on a Teflon pressing sheet, added a second Teflon pressing sheet on top, and pressed the ric rac in place. (This photo is staged as the photo with the second sheet on top didn’t look as nice.)

Then I dabbed a few spots of fabric glue on the underside of these pieces and arranged them between the other points on the square.

I have no affiliation with the item above. It just works really well.

I arranged one piece at a time on the square and machine appliqued around it.

Even the back looks neat. I set my machine to knot the thread at the beginning and the end and it brings both threads to the underside for me. All I need to do is have it cook and clean, too.

What I Learned Today:

  1. There are so many layout options possible for this quilt.
  2. I do not make decisions quickly.
  3. I change my mind a lot.
  4. I tend to try complicated patterns/layouts.
  5. All of the reasons above are why I am behind with the top.
  6. I am getting better with machine applique. Before this quilt, I had never done any machine applique.
  7. I want to do more machine applique.
  8. I can’t cook and quilt at the same time.

I served Tu-Na Helper this platter of burnt offerings for supper the night I made this block. His response was, “They kind of taste like sweet potato fries.”

Question: Do you live where it snows or not? If  you don’t, do you wish you did? We’ve been escaping the snow the last three years by wintering in Arizona. However, we’ll be heading back to North Dakota for a few days over the holidays. It can be pretty when it snows. If it does when we are there, I’m hoping it doesn’t come with ice, cold, and wind.

Karen, what a great find, that white ric-rac with the red thread. That makes a really striking block. All your blocks are lovely.
As you can see, I live in Minnesota, so we have snow. I wouldn’t mind it so much if winter didn’t last for 6 months. I actually don’t care too much about the snow, but I hate the ice and slippery roads.

    Hi Karen,
I knew the wait for your block #1 would be special and worth the delay. I also knew it would include ric rac . . . but I never would have imagined that. It is really you and it is really cool! You are singlehandedly bringing back ric rac! I love it! ~smile~ Roseanne

I LOVE the addition of the red ric rac to your snowflake. It really makes it pop from the background and just gives it a little something special. Your snowflake looks like our day today, it’s a bit gray in the sky and the flakes are slowly making there way to the ground 🙂

Wow! Your snowflake is so gorgeous! LOVE the red-trimmed rick-rack and the alternate size for the white one. Yes, we definitely live where it snows. Hopefully we’ll have some Christmas snow – we don’t usually get much at all in the front end of winter, but mid-Jan through April can be pretty crazy with tons of snow.

A beautiful block, and enjoyable to read how you did it. A great finish to the blocks. Your quilt will be wonderful, no matter which setting you choose. I do not envy you the trip to ND! Here’s hoping your few days are sunny, no breeze days! Tu-Na Helper must be such a nice man. =)
