Tu-Na Quilts: February Goal

I didn’t do too well last month so let’s try again this month. January’s One Monthly Goal was to finish and mail the elephant quilt.

I laid the elephant quilt on the guest bed and figured out what needed to be done to make the rows the same size. (They were sewn on two different machines and are not equal in length.) But that’s as far as it got as we were getting overnight company. So I gathered up the rows and they’ve been hanging over the ironing board ever since.

And then I got distracted making some pine trees for my Bee Inspired Bee Mate

and this super cute mixer which I wrote about here. Now you can read my post on the Bee Inspired Blog here and why I needed to sew one and who gets it.

I also spent a couple of all day sewing sessions working on a mystery quilt hosted by my Arizona quilting group.

I picked up this tip to keep organized with the steps by putting the pieces into labeled zip lock bags..

I completed these pieces for day one of the mystery quilt. I must admit that I spent a lot of time checking out the fabric choices of the other class members as well as just chatting.

Here’s a wonderful batik quilt. Even Tu-Na Helper likes this one.

I did lots of volunteering in my AZ community in January: making popcorn for Monday Movie Days, clearing and resetting tables for the Sloppy Joe Lunch, being in charge of ticket sales for the shuffleboard club, and chairing the membership committee for the quilting group. That brings me to this month wondering what happened to the rest of January.

I’ve got several projects needing to be finished this month that I could list here but I want to keep this elephant quilt as my One Monthly Goal. After all it really needs to get done!

So February’s goal is to finish this cute elephant quilt top, quilt it on the longarm, bind it, and put it in the mail.

What I Learned Today:

  1. I suffer from MPD (Multiple Project Disorder).
  2. I am also afflicted with DSD (Distracted Sewing Disease).
  3. I have a problem with time management.
  4. There’s so much to do all the time here at “winter camp for seniors.”
  5. I need to use my time wisely as it will continue to pass quickly no matter what I do or how much or how little I get done.

Question: What do you do help with time management?

Thanks for stopping by and do come again.

I feel your pain. I have so many projects in various stages of completion and new ones knocking on the door. Time is limited. When something comes along (grandkids) and my schedules gets off track, I have to sit down and remember there is more in life than quilting. Those grandkids are growing and they won’t always want to spend time with me!! That doesn’t stop me from having regrets for what I didn’t accomplish but it does make me remember that they will remember me better if we actually interact. So enjoy ALL your activities,…not just the quilty ones.

The mixer block is adorable! I follow my #1 rule, always have fun. If I’m enjoying myself, it doesn’t matter what the plan is or if I have finished the plan.

    Hi Karen,
Feeling useful and helping others is more important than getting a monthly goal accomplished, don’t you think? It’s wonderful that you are able to enjoy the nice weather, have fun activities that you can be involved with, and do a little sewing. You couldn’t let your Bee mates down, nor ignore your local mystery quilt. So the elephants will be finished in February! The perfect only-four-weeks month. ~smile~ Roseanne

I have MPD and DSD too…and all those other things. I’m easily distracted by shiny objects or pretty fabric. Right now I have six projects (possibly more) going at once. Time management for me is not a factor. If I’m not too achy, I sew. LOL Love the elephants!

Those elephants are really cute and someone will love that quilt when you are done. But, is it a baby quilt? Cause, honestly, babies do not understand time yet. As for what you’ve learned — #3 fits me to a “T”. Now, I try to keep a weekly list of quilty things I want to finish. I post it on my Monday blog so there is some accountability. The one thing it does most to help me is remind me what I really want to do. I’m much like a raccoon — oooh shiny new project or fabric or… I will add some non-quilting items occasionally just to remind myself to get out of the house and do something else! Another thing I’ve done with OMG is use the salami method — break the task into doable sizes. I finished an involved UFO a while ago with OMG by dividing what needed to be done into things that could be done in a month. Needless to say every month I was being successful and that motivated me even more to get the whole project done which I did over time. Good luck.

Oh, I hate when that happens – too much to do and too little time. I thought I had lots of sewing time these past few days, and here I am with nothing to show for it. Other people’s schedules interfered with mine. Hoping for a productive weekend!

Well, I suffer from all of the exact same afflictions, Karen!! One new thing that is helping me with time management is a tool that I bought originally to help one of my sons. The Special Ed teacher told me about it. It’s called a Time Timer and you can set it for up to one hour. No annoying ticking, but what’s different about this clock is that the time remaining is red and gets smaller until all the red is gone when time is up. So if I say that I’m going to work on my pineapple block for one hour, or I’m going to only spend 30 minutes checking email, it’s a great visual reminder of where the time is going. They have it on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Time-Timer-Original-Optional-Management/dp/B000JF4250?th=1
