The elephant quilt top that is. “She Has Her Mommy’s Nose” is now ready to be sandwiched, quilted, and sealed with a pretty binding.

This quilt has languished as a UFO for over a year. Some of you may think that isn’t very long. However, the reality is that it’s meant for a baby that has already turned 1 1/2 and in infant time that’s very long. I joined OMG in January (read Tu-Na Quilts: Let’s Talk about the Elephant in the Closet here) to help me move this one along but by the end of February (read Tu-Na Quilts: February Goal here) it still had not been touched so I revamped my goal strategy (read Tu-Na Quilts: One Monthly Goal for March here and made some progress (read Tu-Na Quilts: Embracing that Embarrassing UFO here) as part of the Quilt Qwazy Queens blog hop. This officially completes my March One Monthly Goal. My April OMG goal will be to quilt, bind, and mail it to that sweet little girl in Philadelphia.

I finished sewing the rows together earlier in the month and then it sat while I pondered whether to border or not.

In the end, the border won. I had talked to my daughter-in-law and she suggested the quilt should be a bit wider so it would fit better on a toddler bed. I listened. It now is 44.5″ x 60.5.” I will expect a couple of inches of shrinkage during the quilting and washing process so it should be a perfect size for mom and tot to curl up with or that sweet little girl to snuggle under while she dreams the night away in her toddler bed.

This post needed more pictures so here’s the Argentine Giant cactus from up the street.

I’ve already cut the binding strips. Last June, I took a poll on this post to see what binding I should do. The overwhelming majority of commenters thought a flanged one would look good and I agreed.

I cut the flange part at 1 3/4″ and the binding part at 1 1/4.” I hope I got it right.

The next step is to decide if I should use my Bernina 740 with the 11″ throat to quilt it (I just received a box of Baby Lock quilting rulers in the mail) or use my quilting group’s longarm. I already have a quilting plan.

What I Learned Today:

  1. Life is so full of decisions.
  2. Decisions tend to stall my projects or maybe it’s my inability to make decisions that is the problem or maybe it’s the multitude of options that make me unable to decide.
  3. Sometimes, I just want to be a kid again where someone tells me what to do and I do it without question.
  4. Slowdown and be more careful and observant. The week my quilting rulers arrived the U.S. was shocked and horrified that someone in Austin, TX was mailing bombs. My box was from Austin. I didn’t think about that until after I had hurriedly and excitedly opened the box. He had not been caught, yet. Thankfully, only the rulers and stitch plate that I had ordered were inside.
  5. We’ve only got 6 weeks left of what Tu-Na Helper and I call “our fun in the sun, winter camp for seniors” and then we head north to our other house.
  6. There are only 117 days until the 2018 Quilt MN Shop Hop starts on July 27th.
  7. I have a lot of sewing to do so I can justify going again.
  8. But their 2018 shop hop fabric line is so pretty this year; it contains one of my favorite flowers, poppies. See my garden poppies here towards the end of the post.   9. I sure learned a lot today. It’s time to go outside and enjoy what’s left of the sun, the fun, and the day.

    It’s a very pretty little quilt top and it will make a wonderful quilt. My grandson’s don’t get their quilts until their first birthdays…partly because I make toddler sized quilts. My decision making seems to be based partly on how much energy I have these days but also I’m trying to have some spontaneous fun!

    So great that you finished the top. And I love the name of the quilt. Spring has arrived here on the wet coast of Canada and it is so wonderful to see all the colour again.

    My decision making process? There isn’t really one at the moment. I have my book of 2018 and monthly goals and it consists of a couple of BOMs. After that, whatever, if anything, I think my health can stand.

    I love the quilt’s name – as well as everything else about it. Go for it and enjoy your quilting – since you want to get it done, I would do it on the machine that 1) will give the best results 2) the one you feel most comfortable on and 3) the one that you can execute you plan the easiest! You can do it!!

    I think adding those borders was a good call. You are so close to a finish! You can do it, Karen! You already have your binding done and a quilting plan, that’s motivation for me right there 🙂 I am drooling over the pic of the Bougainvillea. The pink is so vivid and bright!
