Tu-Na Quilts: The Elephant Quilt is Done

My One Monthly Goal for April was to quilt, bind, and mail this cute little quilt.

As you can see it is quilted and bound with a flange binding.

I finished quilting it on my AZ group’s longarm. It was my first attempt at using a straight ruler.

This is the first time in over a year that I’ve been able to use this machine. My eyes are getting better but after 3 1/2 hours they were tired. At first I ripped out wonky stitches but it didn’t take long and I decided wonky and done was better than perfect and unfinished. I am wearing reading glasses for close-up work while I wait to get prescription glasses.

This was the first time I’ve made a flange binding.

It was not easy. However, I received a couple more tips today (after I’d already finished with it) about doing this flange binding. I might have to try it again.

This quilt is for my best friend’s granddaughter. She’s 1 1/2 years old and the perfect age to get her own quilt. I remember the day my friend became a grandmother. She called and the second thing she said was, “You should see her. She has her mommy’s nose.”

I used my new Baby Loc ruler to quilt the chevrons.

This quilt languished as a UFO for over a year while that little one continued to grow.

I had great fun making that elephant family (you can read the story here) and Dr. Tu-Na even participated in the delivery of that new baby Lily (read it here).

I added some bubbles to the top row.

Quilt backs can be fun too.

Quilt Stats:

Name: She Has Her Mommy’s Nose

Size: 44″ x 57″

Pattern: I designed the quilt pattern using 4″ finished HSTs for the chevrons with a family of elephants. The elephants are by Lorna McMahon of Sew Fresh Quilts. The large elephant block can be found here and the small elephant block found here.

Pieced and Quilted by: me

Fabrics for the top include: All 100 % cottons, Teal – Chalkboard Snowman by Jennifer Brinley for Studio e, Peach – Roots & Winest by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs, Elephants – Bouncing Elephants by Bridgette Lane for Free Spirit. The backing includes Alpine Fabrics Basics (flannel) and a strip of Parading Elephants from Cuddle.

Thread: Pieced with Auriful, Quilted with So Fine by Superior.

Batting: Warm and Natural

My Mama sent along this cute little elephant book to include in the package with the quilt.

It’s actually a book. It’s a good thing I got it done now and not when my friend’s granddaughter went to college.

I rolled the quilt, wrapped it in tissue paper, smooshed it into the box, and topped it with the elephant book to guard it.

This was the box that my fat quarter bundle and yardage I used for The Keyhole Quilt (read it here) came in. The box from my latest delivery was too small.

You’ll be sleeping well soon, little one, even if this quilt arrives just in time for warmer weather!

What I Learned Today:

For only $58.00, I could choose next day delivery. I did not.
That little girl will have this quilt in her little hands sometime on Wednesday.
I saved $38.00 to use to buy my next project.
Tu-Na Helper has nice legs.
I look good in teal-colored glasses. I will have to consider colored frames when I can get my new glasses.
The postage included insurance for $50.00. That doesn’t even cover the fabric. Hopefully, it will arrive safely and I won’t regret not adding additional insurance.

Question: Do you opt for quick backs using extra-wide yardage, use up what you have in your stash, or do you make them interesting? I like to make them interesting. It takes more time but is a lot of fun to think about and design.
