Tu-Na Quilts: The Elephant Quilt is Done

My One Monthly Goal for April was to quilt, bind, and mail this cute little quilt.

tunaquilts 9a

As you can see it is quilted and bound with a flange binding.

I finished quilting it on my AZ group’s longarm. It was my first attempt at using a straight ruler.

This is the first time in over a year that I’ve been able to use this machine. My eyes are getting better but after 3 1/2 hours they were tired. At first I ripped out wonky stitches but it didn’t take long and I decided wonky and done was better than perfect and unfinished. I am wearing reading glasses for close-up work while I wait to get prescription glasses.

This was the first time I’ve made a flange binding.

tunaquilts 11a

It was not easy. However, I received a couple more tips today (after I’d already finished with it) about doing this flange binding. I might have to try it again.

This quilt is for my best friend’s granddaughter. She’s 1 1/2 years old and the perfect age to get her own quilt. I remember the day my friend became a grandmother. She called and the second thing she said was, “You should see her. She has her mommy’s nose.”

I used my new Baby Loc ruler to quilt the chevrons.

This quilt languished as a UFO for over a year while that little one continued to grow.

I had great fun making that elephant family (you can read the story here) and Dr. Tu-Na even participated in the delivery of that new baby Lily (read it here).

I added some bubbles to the top row.

Quilt backs can be fun too.

Tu-Na Helper lives up to his name. Thanks.

My Mama sent along this cute little elephant book to include in the package with the quilt.

tunaquilts 8a

It’s actually a book. It’s a good thing I got it done now and not when my friend’s granddaughter went to college.

I rolled the quilt, wrapped it in tissue paper, smooshed it into the box, and topped it with the elephant book to guard it.

tunaquilts 12a

This was the box that my fat quarter bundle and yardage I used for The Keyhole Quilt (read it here) came in. The box from my latest delivery was too small.

You’ll be sleeping well soon, little one, even if this quilt arrives just in time for warmer weather!

What I Learned Today:

  1. For only $58.00, I could choose next day delivery. I did not.
  2. That little girl will have this quilt in her little hands sometime on Wednesday.
  3. I saved $38.00 to use to buy my next project.
  4. Tu-Na Helper has nice legs.
  5. I look good in teal-colored glasses. I will have to consider colored frames when I can get my new glasses.
  6. The postage included insurance for $50.00. That doesn’t even cover the fabric. Hopefully, it will arrive safely and I won’t regret not adding additional insurance.

Question: Do you opt for quick backs using extra-wide yardage, use up what you have in your stash, or do you make them interesting? I like to make them interesting. It takes more time but is a lot of fun to think about and design.

Thanks for stopping by and do come again.

I have only used a wide back once, for a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, so you know it was a big one. By the time I get the quilting done, I don’t want to think about being too creative with the backing. I quilt everything on my regular machine, and quilting is my least favorite part of the process.
Your elephant quilt is so cute and will be treasured.

What a super cute quilt!!! I love elephants!

As for backings … if I can, I love using the 108″ backing for the large quilts … if I have enough of the yardage left, I’d like to piece it to make the back, but due to laziness, that seldom happens and I usually end up buying backing.

    Happy Quilting! 🙂

Great job Karen, it’s a lovely quilt and well done on the ruller work too, it’s something I haven’t attempted yet. As for the backs of quilts I vary it. For a quilt with a lot of seams a wide back is great I think, the downfall is I end up with a long strip I never seem to use unless I make matching pillowcases or cushions. Other times I split a standard length and insert an off centre panel using the quilt leftovers, looks great and uses scraps as well as being economical. The downside is it takes time and I’m often too impatient. That’s partly why my Gypsy Wife is still a flimsy.

    Hi Karen,
What a fabulous finish for April! Aren’t you proud of yourself?!! You should be. I love the backing with the cute little elephants on it – so perfect and special to go with the front. Nice job on the ruler quilting and the flange binding. I haven’t tried that technique yet, but I sure like the look of it! Now I’m wondering what your May goal is going to be! I think I will find out shortly. ~smile~ Roseanne

I buy 108” wide fabric by the bolt so I tend to use it often. Idk why I will spend months on a quilt top and then get lazy on the back lol… I guess I’m ready to get it quilted and gift it. I LOVE your elephant quilt, it is adorable!

I usually use up scraps or my practice block in the backing. I am trying to finish a quilt for my granddaughter’s graduation.

I always make my backs “interesting” as you say. I have this thing about trying to use up my stash so I just do! Thanks for sharing this on Wednesday Wait Loss!

Awww Karen, what a cute quilt! I know it will be a treasure to it’s little owner! You did a great job on the flange border. I haven’t tried that yet! You did just fine on the quilting. I love ruler work but my straight lines sometimes wind up wonky too!

Yay! for an OMG done! I did not get mine done… SO wonderful to see this adorable quilt, and I love what you did on the back…I’m partial to fun backs, but after using wide backing twice now, it sure is nice! Another yay for using rulers on the longarm! Love the name of the quilt too.

I love your elephants! Good call on not spending $58 for next-day shipping.

I use wide fabric a lot for backing these days, because I’m trying to finish up a monster pile of UFOs. I also hate it when I have a great back on a quilt and then spot the recipient using the quilt upside down. So I aim for unremarkable backs these days. Maybe someday I’ll brush that chip off my shoulder!

You did it, Karen! I knew you could. This turned out adorable and the addition of the little elephant book is so cute. I’m sure both will be well loved. Just curious…did you fall in love with ruler work?
