Presenting Autumn Harvest Barn

Making This Block Just a Little Easier

You’ll find this pattern easy to follow and make. I changed it a bit to reflect my personal preference. I chose to eliminate the two pinwheels at the top and put one on the side of the barn.

I’ve seen a few barn quilts during the past several years while traveling through the state of Minnesota on their annual shop hop.

I’ve even painted a barn quilt myself. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to showcase one on the side of the barn in the block.

Building a Barn Quilt

Just in case you want to make one on the side of your barn, follow these steps.

Make a pinwheel following the directions on the pattern except using 2.5″ squares. Make 4. Trim to 1.5″ and sew together to create a 2.5″ square pinwheel.

Sew a 1.5″ x 2.5″ barn side piece to the top of the pinwheel and a 2.5″ x 2.5″ barn side piece to the bottom of the pinwheel. Sew a 1.5″ x 5.5″ barn side piece to each side of the pinwheel.

You have just sewn the side of the barn that matches the size given on the pattern. Finish according to the pattern directions.

Adding a Harvest Moon

After completing my block, I felt the top looked a little plain. I added a “harvest moon” by laying a 4″ square in the corner of the top sky piece and sewing on the diagonal line before attaching to the top of the barn. While some may say it looks like a sun, I’m calling it half a moon.

Cut a 4″ x 12.5″ piece for the sky and a 4″ square for the moon. Lay the moon square on the top right. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other. Stitch just to the right of the line (towards the corner) and flip. Complete according to the pattern directions.

Waste Not Want Not

Whenever I make a 2.5″ or larger HST, I always make an extra HST out of the other side even if it’s not needed for the pattern. These extras go into my barrel for a future project. It’s like finding free fabric.

You can join in anytime. Each 12.5″ (unfinished) block will be released every other Tuesday with the last one scheduled for release on October 16th. You are free to make these blocks any way you want. However, if you are wanting to enter the contest, be sure to read the rules found in the Enter to Win section below to make sure your entry counts. 

The patterns will remain free on the respective designer’s blog until November 13, 2018. Designers may choose to keep them free after that time or make them available for a charge in their pattern shops. The final link up for the finished top containing all 12 of these blocks (it doesn’t have to be quilted) for the mega giveaway is November 13th at 11:59 EST.

What I Learned Today:

1. Vacations can be tiring. We just returned from a month long vacation to Germany, Austria, and Italy.
2. Tu-Na Helper is a good driver even when he can’t read or understand the road signs. Yes, part of our trip was a road trip through those three countries.
3. Avoid Chicago when traveling. Our only trip problems were in Chicago. The first was a one day delay caused by weather and the second was on our return trip when they couldn’t find our ticket reservations for our connecting flight. When the attendant was finally convinced that we indeed had them, it was too late to catch that flight. She reserved tickets for us on the next flight—the next day.

Question: Have you seen a barn quilt? Where? I’ve seen several in Minnesota and Ohio.
