Presenting Autumn Harvest Barn

tunaquilts 1a

I changed my barn just a bit from the pattern by adding a barn quilt to the side. I also added a harvest moon instead of the two pinwheels at the top. I’ll add the X on the door with quilting stitches during that process.

This 12.5″ block was designed by Abbie Danahy of Sparkle On! Please visit her blog here to download your free pattern. Remember these patterns are free only as long as the Fall Into a QAL is in process. Don’t delay, download your pattern today.

Making This Block Just a Little Easier

You’ll find this pattern easy to follow and make. I changed it a bit to reflect my personal preference. I chose to eliminate the two pinwheels at the top and put one on the side of the barn.

I’ve seen a few barn quilts during the past several years while traveling through the state of Minnesota on their annual shop hop.

I’ve even painted a barn quilt myself. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to showcase one on the side of the barn in the block.

tunaquilts 7a

My mom (top middle), my two sisters (bottom row), my niece (top right), and myself (top left) made these barn quilts a couple of years ago at the North Country Arts and Crafts Workshop held at the Foreign Language Camps near Bemidji, MN.

Building a Barn Quilt

Just in case you want to make one on the side of your barn, follow these steps.

Make a pinwheel following the directions on the pattern except using 2.5″ squares. Make 4. Trim to 1.5″ and sew together to create a 2.5″ square pinwheel.

tunaquilts 3a

Sew a 1.5″ x 2.5″ barn side piece to the top of the pinwheel and a 2.5″ x 2.5″ barn side piece to the bottom of the pinwheel. Sew a 1.5″ x 5.5″ barn side piece to each side of the pinwheel.

tunaquilts 1a

You have just sewn the side of the barn that matches the size given on the pattern. Finish according to the pattern directions.

Adding a Harvest Moon

After completing my block, I felt the top looked a little plain. I added a “harvest moon” by laying a 4″ square in the corner of the top sky piece and sewing on the diagonal line before attaching to the top of the barn. While some may say it looks like a sun, I’m calling it half a moon.

Cut a 4″ x 12.5″ piece for the sky and a 4″ square for the moon. Lay the moon square on the top right. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other. Stitch just to the right of the line (towards the corner) and flip. Complete according to the pattern directions.

Waste Not Want Not

Whenever I make a 2.5″ or larger HST, I always make an extra HST out of the other side even if it’s not needed for the pattern. These extras go into my barrel for a future project. It’s like finding free fabric.

tunaquilts 5a

I was able to make an extra HST using the sky and barn piece. You can see my two rows of stitching. I just need to cut between those two rows.

tunaquilts 6a

Free Fabric!! I was able to get one 3″ and three 1.5″ HSTs.

Join this QAL

You can join in anytime. Each 12.5″ (unfinished) block will be released every other Tuesday with the last one scheduled for release on October 16th. You are free to make these blocks any way you want. However, if you are wanting to enter the contest, be sure to read the rules found in the Enter to Win section below to make sure your entry counts.

The patterns will remain free on the respective designer’s blog until November 13, 2018. Designers may choose to keep them free after that time or make them available for a charge in their pattern shops. The final link up for the finished top containing all 12 of these blocks (it doesn’t have to be quilted) for the mega giveaway is November 13th at 11:59 EST.

Enter to Win

A winner will be selected at random from all the blocks posted. Details are listed below.

The prize for this block includes 4 cuts of assorted Craftsy Boundless solids; 1/2” yard of each.

And

A free PDF table runner pattern “Christmas Tree Farm” by April Adams of JANDA Bend Quilts.

Please help us support our QAL sponsors.

Visit Craftsy and Janda Bend Quilts to see what they have to offer.

Entering to win the prize above is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Everyone (You must be 18 to be able to enter to win prizes) gets to participate because International entries are welcome! You do NOT need to have a blog to enter. Hosts and designers are not eligible to win.
  2. Make a block using Abbie’s pattern. Take a picture of it. Slight variations of the pattern are ok such as embellishments but keep your block true to the designed pattern if  you are entering the giveaway. The block should definitely be recognizable as one made from this free pattern. Deviating too much (or substituting a different block entirely) will cause your entry not to be counted. If you have questions if it’s allowed for entry into the giveaway, please ask me before you cut.
  3. Post a picture of your block before 11:59 PM EST, October 15th either on the Facebook page, or on Instagram #fallintoaqal, or on Abbie’s blog at the Linky party on the bottom of her post. You are welcome to post a picture on each of the sources but it will only count as one entry.

Winners are drawn from the eligible pictured blocks and prizes awarded every other week. A mega grand-prize using all 12 of the block patterns sewn into a quilt top/flimsy (quilting not necessary) will be awarded at the end of the Fall Into a QAL .

What I Learned Today:

  1. Vacations can be tiring. We just returned from a month long vacation to Germany, Austria, and Italy.
  2. Tu-Na Helper is a good driver even when he can’t read or understand the road signs. Yes, part of our trip was a road trip through those three countries.
  3. Avoid Chicago when traveling. Our only trip problems were in Chicago. The first was a one day delay caused by weather and the second was on our return trip when they couldn’t find our ticket reservations for our connecting flight. When the attendant was finally convinced that we indeed had them, it was too late to catch that flight. She reserved tickets for us on the next flight—the next day.

Question: Have you seen a barn quilt? Where? I’ve seen several in Minnesota and Ohio.

Thanks for stopping by and do come again.

That’s a fun, funky barn, Karen. I can imagine a month of travel would be very tiring. But I bet you saw some fantastic sights.

I hope they comped your hotel that night, too! I love your barn in polka dots. I was thinking of doing a barn quilt on mine, but not a pinwheel. I’m not sure yet.

Yes, we received hotels for both of those nights. The first one was in Springfield MO where we had to go refuel because we’d been circling for too long waiting for O’Hare to open. We only were in the hotel for 4 hours as we had to be back to catch our early flight. The returning flight’s stay was a bit longer.

I really like the addition of the barn quilt and harvest moon Karen, it adds something to the block. That sounds like a wonderful trip, especially Italy, my favourite holiday destination ever, makes me wish I could go back again.

Great work as ever Karen! Your barn is cheerful and I’m jealous that you have a barn quilt. I only have a garden shed but maybe I could make one for that. Your trip to Europe sounds good and I’m glad to hear your driver coped with the challenges – he’s definitely a keeper.

Karen, your cheerful barn is awesome! I love the addition of the barn quilt and seeing you and your family with your beautiful barn quilts. You’ve inspired me to try my hand at making one too.
Thank you for all your tips and photos.

Cute barn block and I love the barn quilt on the side! Thanks for sharing. And, yes, I have seen quite a few barn quilts in my travels in the southeast and Alabama. I love looking for them when we travel!

I totally forgot to add my barn quilt to my post! Ha! But I love it. Love that you added a barn quilt to the side of your barn. I should have thought to do that. Real cute! Thanks for sharing this on Wait Loss Wednesday!

Fun barn block. Your addition makes a lot of sense! I’ve wanted to paint a barn quilt block but don’t have anywhere to hang one. I might have to put some thought into that… I have walls in the house I could use.
