Presenting Owl

Making This Block Just a Little Easier

You’ll find this owl easy to make. I recommend following Vanda’s well-detailed instructions. Take your time and look at each page of her instructions as you add your  layers to create the owl.

I suggest cutting the background square at 13″ and then trimming after appliquéing.

However, if you want an easy way to center the owl on the block read on.

To help you center the owl on your block, fold your block in half and press a crease with an iron.

I then folded the body piece and head in half to find the center and matched it up with the crease in the block. I wanted my owl to be in the middle of my picture.

Adding a tree branch

As you see, my owl sits on a tree branch. Ok. It is just a strip of fabric but it could be a tree branch. I cut a 1.25″ x 9″ strip for the tree and a 1.25″ x 5″ background piece and sewed the short sides together. I then trimmed to 13″.

Then I added a 2″ x 13″ background strip to the bottom and a 11″ x 13″ background rectangle to the top. I then trimmed the block to 13″ square. I will trim this block to 12.5″ after I’ve finished appliquéing it.

You can join in anytime. All of the 12.5″ (unfinished) blocks have now been released. You are free to make these blocks any way you want. However, if you are wanting to enter the contest, be sure to read the rules found in the Enter to Win section below to make sure your entry counts. 

The patterns will remain free on the respective designer’s blog until November 13, 2018. Designers may choose to keep them free after that time or make them available for a charge in their pattern shops. The final link up for the finished top containing all 12 of these blocks (it doesn’t have to be quilted) for the mega giveaway is November 12th at 11:59 EST.

Entering to win the prize above is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Everyone (You must be 18 to be able to enter to win prizes) gets to participate because International entries are welcome! You do NOT need to have a blog to enter. Hosts and designers are not eligible to win.
2. Make a block using Vanda’s pattern. Take a picture of it. Slight variations of the pattern are ok such as embellishments but keep your block true to the designed pattern if  you are entering the giveaway. The block should definitely be recognizable as one made from this free pattern. Deviating too much (or substituting a different block entirely) will cause your entry not to be counted. If you have questions if it’s allowed for entry into the giveaway, please ask me before you cut.
3. Post a picture of your block before 11:59 PM EST, October 29th either on the Facebook page, or on Instagram #fallintoaqal, or on Vanda’s blog at the Linky party on the bottom of her post. You are welcome to post a picture on each of the sources but it will only count as one entry.

What I Learned Today:

1. Tu-Na’s running out of time; I have so much to do before we fly south for the winter. We are still taking care of our apple harvest by freezing apple sauce and pie filling, cidering apples, drying apple rings, baking pies and crisps, and eating fresh apples.
2. I am tired. We had two busy weekends of cider making. I think we have two more left or we just might call it quits.
3. I’m still missing the canning jar block. I better check on those pickles as they’ve fermented way too long.
4. I need a design wall.
