I didn’t have to travel far to attend our village’s jam session two Friday’s ago. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw a young couple who had come to visit an older friend. It’s rare to find young people in our 55+ village and they looked so cute and happy together.
Meet Ian and Alicia.
They smiled and danced and as they swirled around to the music on the dance floor, I discovered fiber art in an unsuspecting place.
The doily is set off to the side adding even more interest to the work.
Alicia had found several crocheted doilies at either a thrift shop or yard sale (I can’t remember which). She loved that handwork and wanted to embrace all the work and love that went into the making of it. She bought several and sewed one onto the back of Ian’s shirt. I think it displays rather nicely. I’d love to see what she does with the others.
What I Learned Today:
- I don’t have much in the way of polka dot fabric. You all know what that means. No, I’m not making do with what I have; I’m heading to the fabric shop.
- I have much to learn from younger artists about using pieces in new and different ways.
Question: Have you found fabric art work in an unsuspecting place? Where? This one was surprising but the finished result is stunning. Ian was pleased to wear it. How’s that for a young couple supporting each other?

I never would have thought of displaying that lovely piece in that particular way. I can’t say that I’ve found fiber art in an unusual place yet, but I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open for it now!

What a great post! I’m always hunting for fiber art. I love that doily shirt. I think that artist is onto something! My favorite personal up-cyle was an old printed clothespin bag I found at an estate sale. I turned it into a mini quilt.

They are too cute! The way she repurposed that beautiful doily is so cool and even cooler he’s wearing it. I’m not sure I could have sold David on that one. You have me wondering, am I not being observant? Is there fabric art that I am missing everyday?

A very fun shirt. Ian is very supportive, the lace is even pink. Not all guys would do that. Not so much fabric art as I’ve been admiring all the gorgeous spring prints.

How awesome! My favorite handwork in an unexpected place was a jeep on the highway with a very brightly colored crocheted tire cover on the spare tire on the back of the jeep.
